our story
The Umberto Group’s humble start, began in March of 2010 at a little ‘hole in the wall’ on High Street, Thornbury. The site for the original Umberto Espresso Bar was chosen specifically because Thornbury is where Umberto Finanzio and his family settled when migrating to Melbourne from Rosarno, Calabria in 1956.
Marrying Joanie in May of 1970, the two of them built a life together. Strong work ethic, good food, coffee and most importantly, family, were the foundations for their eldest son Marco, to realise a shared dream.
Today, the Umberto Group employ 60 people across 5 venues, successfully providing homecooked food and proper coffee with genuine hospitality. Genuine hospitality is a philosophy that runs consistently throughout each venue, and just like individual family members, each have their own distinct personalities.
We are an active contributor to our Darebin community and in 2019, the Umberto Group launched a community initiative called La Nostra Comunità via Festa di Santa Giovanna.
The Umberto Group are strong on our core values and these are at the forefront of everything we do –
- We approach all work and decision making ethically and with integrity
- We are committed to supporting our community
- We value whole of life balance and strive to support each other to achieve this
The Umberto Group continues to grow and remains proud of being able to celebrate it’s Italian heritage delivering experiences that are authentic to a market that values community and tradition.
We acknowledge the Wurundjeri people as the traditional owners and custodians of this land and recognise their continuing connection to land, waters and culture. We pay respect to their Elders past, present and emerging.
